At PSCSW, we are deeply committed to advocating for policies that support clinical social workers in Pennsylvania and beyond. One significant step forward is our support of H.B. 1841, introduced by Rep. Aerion A. Abney, D-Allegheny, on November 14th. This vital legislation seeks to add Pennsylvania to the Social Work Licensure Compact, enabling social workers licensed in the state to practice across multiple states seamlessly.
About H.B. 1841
The Social Work Licensure Compact aims to reduce barriers for social workers, making it easier to provide essential services across state lines while ensuring public safety. If passed, the legislation would:
- Allow licensed social workers to apply for multi-state licensure, broadening their professional opportunities.
- Establish a comprehensive data system to ensure transparency regarding licensure status and any related actions, promoting public trust and safety.
- Increase access to mental health care to communities that are in mental health desert which include rural areas
Rep. Abney, who holds a master’s degree in social work from the University of Pittsburgh, stated, “Often an underappreciated profession, an increased demand for social workers became evident through the pandemic and continues as people deal with ongoing traumas. My bill would be a win-win for social workers seeking employment opportunities and individuals in need of personal and emotional assistance.”
