Book Description:

An accomplished writer of fiction, recipient of many prestigious awards for her writing, and a teacher at Princeton University describes her inner experience of losing her two sons to suicide at 16 and 19 years of age.  This is a book of how one mother gained the strength to move forward with her life after such an unimaginable loss.  Li’s descriptions of her relationships with her sons, her compassion for them, and her perspective of keeping them in her life after their physical loss is both beautiful and inspiring.  She has the capacity to use language which enables us to move with her through the pain of the loss and gain insight into how one can accept loss as well as find meaning and beauty in life.

Rationale for suggesting this book:
This book provides us with the opportunity to discuss how to support individuals and families who have experienced loss by suicide.  It is not a book about suicide prevention.  Rather, it is a book about love and loss, and how we can support people who have experienced extraordinary loss.  This book enables us to gain empathy and compassion without judgment.  While many books which focus on suicide focus on finding answers, this one gives us insight into a grieving mother’s perspective and her ability to use her strengths to move forward to find meaning in her life while holding onto her love for her children.

Facilitator:

Sylvia B. Gentry, MSSW, LCSW received her MSSW from the University of Louisville Kent School of Social Work. She has been Director of Campus Services at The Children’s Home of Cincinnati and Director of Clinical Services and Case Management at Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health Services, as well as an Adjunct faculty member at Edgecliff College and the University of Cincinnati.  After moving to Philadelphia 20 years ago, Sylvia worked for the Bucks County Behavioral Health System as an Adult Services Specialist for six years.  She had a part time private practice in Cincinnati, and continued a private practice, consulting and supervising after moving to Philadelphia.  She is a member of the PSCSW Professional Standards, Ethics and Licensing Committee, as well as the Planning Committee of the Clinical Book Discussion Program.

Clinical Goals:
1. Develop perspectives to support survivors of loss by suicide.
2. Demonstrate the unpredictability of suicide.
3. Explore how the concept of radical acceptance can support people to move forward from loss.

This event is open to PSCSW members only. Participants who attend this program must be present for its entirety to earn 3 clinical credits.
