Book Title: You Should Be Grateful, by Angela Tucker
Book Description:
Angela Tucker is a Black woman, adopted from foster care by white parents. She has heard this microaggression her entire life, usually from well-intentioned strangers who view her adoptive parents as noble saviors. She is grateful for many aspects of her life, but being transracially adopted involves layers of rejection, loss, and complexity that cannot be summed up so easily. In “You Should Be Grateful,” Tucker centers the experiences of adoptees to share deeply personal stories, well-researched history, and engrossing anecdotes from mentorship sessions with adopted youth. These perspectives challenge the fairy-tale narrative of adoption, giving way to a fuller story that explores the impacts of racism, classism, family, love, and belonging.
Clinical Objectives:
By reading the book and participating in the discussion, participants will earn 3 CEU’s and:
• Identify ways that transracial adoption may impact adoptees’ mental health and wellbeing
• Explore ways that white supremacy has historically influenced transracial adoption
• Develop culturally sensitive clinical skills for working with transracially adopted individuals
About our Facilitator: Ana Kearney, LSW, MA
Ana Kearney, LSW, MA, works as a school social worker in Philadelphia but has always had a passion for working with children and families. Operating out of a trauma-informed and attachment focus, Ana’s practice is eclectic, tailoring each intervention to the family and child. In her master level thesis, Ana conducted original research into how transracial adoptees from Latin America develop their racial and ethnic identities after growing up in the United States.
