For those of you who may be new to PSCSW or unfamiliar with the group; here is a brief history.
Originally convened by Annette Deigh, LCSW in 2008, the Social Workers of Color (SWOC) subcommittee was created to provide support for members of the Pennsylvania Society of Clinical Social Workers (PSCSW) who self-identified as social workers of color to provide an affirming and supportive space for social workers of color to discuss the challenges of being the numerical minority in many of the PSCSW events, groups and meetings.
Now, the group hosts meetings for a small but dedicated group of social workers of color. Our purpose continues to be providing an affirming and supportive space for social workers of color to discuss the challenges of being in the numerical minority not only within PSCSW but also in classrooms, field placements, agency/hospital work, and private practice. Members in the group have expressed appreciation for having a place where they are free to express themselves without the challenges of monitoring their opinions or being held accountable to teach and inform their fellow social workers about their experiences with racism and oppression.
SWOC has been able to provide a platform for social workers of color in all stages of their careers to engage in networking, professional development, goal development, obtaining licensure, balancing professional selves with work selves, and giving back to our communities through volunteer efforts.
All self-identified social workers of color currently active members in PSCSW are invited to participate in the Social Workers of Color (SWOC) committee.
Our meetings are free for PSCSW members.
We hope to see you there!!
Ms. Odessa Clarkson
