Workshop Summary
In this workshop, Dr. Allen will review the basic tenets of scientific attachment theory with children. This will include the fundamentals of attachment behavior, attachment scripts, and the role of caregivers. A special emphasis will be on discussing the impact of maltreatment and changes in placement that commonly occur when the child welfare system is involved. Dr. Allen will review how this understanding can improve mental health care and permanency services among children experiencing foster and adoptive homes. Additionally, the common misperceptions of attachment theory that negatively impact on the provision of these services for children will be explored. Dr. Allen will bring this work to life with case examples to demonstrate the material.
Invited Presenter
Brian Allen, Psy.D., is a clinical psychologist who currently serves as the Director of Mental Health Services at the Penn State Children’s Hospital’s Center for the Protection of Children. He is also an Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Behavioral Health in the Penn State College of Medicine and core faculty in the Child Maltreatment Solutions Network at Penn State University. Dr. Allen conducts research on the developmental impact of childhood trauma and maltreatment, the effectiveness and implementation of clinical interventions for children, and problematic sexual behavior among preteen children. His research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Children’s Miracle Network, and other public and private agencies. To date, he has published over 50 scientific papers and book chapters and is the author of the upcoming book, The Science and Clinical Practice of Attachment Theory: A Guide from Infancy to Adulthood (American Psychological Association, January 2023). He currently serves on the editorial boards of multiple scientific journals and is an Associate Board Member of the Society for Emotion and Attachment Studies.

FOR PENNSYLVANIA SOCIAL WORKERS, MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPISTS, AND PROFESSIONAL COUNSELORS: This program is approved for 4 CE credits for professional workshops sponsored by the Pennsylvania Society for Clinical Social Work, a state affiliate of the Clinical Social Work Association listed in Section 47.36 of Title 49, Chapter 47 of the PA Code, State Board of Social Work Examiners. This program is also approved for 4 CE credits for professional workshops for marriage & family therapists (Section 48.36) and professional counselors (Section 49.36).
FOR NEW JERSEY SOCIAL WORKERS: This program is approved for 4 clinical continuing education credits. Attendance at programs or courses given at state and national social work association conferences, where the criteria for membership is an academic degree in social work, are a valid source of continuing education credit (N.J.A.C. 13:44G-6.4(c)4).
