Program Description:

In this program, we will explore clinical moments in relationally oriented therapy.  Using the video series “Group”, based on Irvin Yalom’s novel, “Schopenhauer’s Cure”, we will explore questions like:  What makes a “sparkling moment” particularly meaningful?  How do such important clinical moments deepen the subjective experience of the client, as well as the intersubjective experience of the therapeutic relationship?  How do we recognize a “sparkling moment”?  How does “telehealth” and social distancing impact the relational aspects of therapy?  Are “sparkling moments” possible in such a context, and if so, how do recognize them, experience them, and respond to them in therapy?  This series is available on YouTube, consisting of 7, 15 minute episodes.  Though “Group” illustrates a fictional case of group psychotherapy, the focus of the presentation will be general clinical work; individual, family and group focused clinicians are welcome!

Clinical Objectives:

  • Participants will watch a video-based, fictional case study of group therapy.
  • Participants will be able to identify “sparkling moments” in the course of the therapy presented.
  • Participants will be able to verbalize how “sparkling moments” and the therapeutic relationship are connected.
  • Participants will be able to facilitate, recognize and respond to “sparkling moments” in their own work.
  • Participants will be able to discuss their own subjective experience of online/phone-based clinical work, and to list opportunities as well as challenges to creating meaningful clinical moments in this context.
