About the Book: This book describes and delineates the technical problems intrinsic to clinical work with highly defended patients, especially those who have suffered trauma early in their lives that interfered with their feeling sufficiently held and contained by their primary objects of attachment. Suffering and Sacrifice in the Clinical Encounter offers a new paradigm for understanding the impasses and failures in the psychotherapy process for patients entrenched in self-blaming and masochistic patterns of behavior. Based on object relation theory, and including anthropological and mythological perspectives, multiple clinical examples are presented to illustrate successful therapeutic techniques. Each chapter includes the results of clinical observation, the examination of appropriate theory, and the especially powerful function of the “reversible perspective” where the patient seeks to change roles with the therapist. This book suggests potentially useful paradigms for understanding, engaging and containing the highly resistant patient. The presenters will cite clinical examples of the technique and explain how it can prevent negative therapeutic reactions.
Clinical Objectives: By reading this book and participating in the discussion, participants will
- Identify the distinction between suffering and sacrifice in clinical work.
- Analyze the significance and role of mourning in suffering, and describe how it is a necessary component of overcoming psychic pain.
- Define “resistance” and examine its manifestations in the clinical encounter.
- Describe the concept of “muscular containment” of the resistant patient.
- Identify examples of resistance that communicates emotional pain thought to be intolerable.
