This program will focus on the writing of the book, Grief from the Inside Out, by Fran Gerstein in the context of narrative therapy, stressing the importance of creating a family narrative around sudden loss as well as the healing that eventually accompanies it. The book will be made available for participants both before and during the event.
- Describe the process of writing as a narrative therapy technique
- Identify three factors that contribute to writing as a healing tool
- List ways writing a narrative can be used clinically, with examples
About the Presenter:
Fran Gerstein, LCSW, BCD has been in private practice for over 30 years. Since the loss of her son, Daniel, in 2014 she has focused more on helping family members survive the loss of a loved one to substance abuse or suicide and runs a support group for parents called Life After Loss in Rosemont, PA.
Fran has published personal and professional articles in the Philadelphia Inquirer, clinical social work journals, and for a book called Psychotherapist Revealed by Bloomgarden and Menutti. She has served as adjunct faculty for the University of Pennsylvania, Bryn Mawr School of Social Work and Jefferson University. She is a frequent lecturer on topics including family therapy, couple’s work, eating disorders, and grief and loss.
Cost: No charge for PSCSW Members to attend; $20 for Non Members to attend. There is a $10 fee for anyone wishing a CE certificate.

This program is presented and hosted by PSCSW members. Both the presenter and host put a lot of time and preparation to make sure that attendees are receiving a wonderful program and feel welcome at the program. Participants who attend this program must be present for its entirety in order to get the continuing education credits.

This program is also approved for credits for professional workshops for marriage & family therapists (Section 48.36) and professional counselors (Section 49.36).
FOR NEW JERSEY SOCIAL WORKERS: This program is approved for clinical credits. Attendance at programs or courses given at state and national social work association conferences, where the criteria for membership is an academic degree in social work, are a valid source of continuing education credit (N.J.A.C. 13:44G-6.4(c)4).
