Ethical Concerns in the Treatment of Traumatized Clients

 Workshop Summary

Treating traumatized individuals entails much more than witnessing their memories of what happened. Research shows a strong association between a history of trauma and symptoms such as suicidality, self-harm, eating disorders, substance abuse and even violence towards others. In addition, traumatized individuals are left with a profound loss of trust and hyper-vigilant anticipation of future threat, biasing their perceptions of the therapist and therapy. The therapist working with this population is likely to encounter particularly challenging ethical issues from confidentiality to duty to warn to client misperceptions of unethical behavior.

This workshop will address how to understand the effects of trauma on the client, how to interpret threats of violence towards self and others, confidentiality in the context of trauma, and other predictable ethical issues. Participants will be encouraged to present cases as we apply a modern understanding of trauma and its effects to the ethical challenges that arise in the treatment.

Invited Presenter

Dr. Janina Fisher, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and a former instructor at Harvard Medical School.

An international expert on the treatment of trauma, she is an Advisory Board member of the Trauma Research Foundation and author of three books: Healing the Fragmented Selves of Trauma Survivors: Overcoming Self-Alienation (2017), Transforming the Living Legacy of Trauma: a Workbook for Survivors and Therapists (2021), and The Living Legacy Instructional Flip Chart (2022). She is best known for her work on integrating mindfulness-based interventions into trauma treatment, and she is also the creator of Trauma-Informed Stabilization Treatment (TIST) therapy.

Objectives

1. Participants will understand clients and conceptualize cases from a trauma and neuroscience perspective
2. Participants will evaluate client symptoms and anticipate ethical issues
3. Participants will use “trauma-informed communication” to address transference and countertransference issues in the therapy
4. Participants will identify therapeutic errors and use them to enhance treatment and increase client trust

This program is also approved for 3 CE credits for professional workshops for marriage & family therapists (Section 48.36) and professional counselors (Section49.36).

FOR NEW JERSEY SOCIAL WORKERS: This program is approved for 3 clinical continuing education ethics credits.
