Book Description:
Three Little Words: A Memoir by Ashley Rhodes-Courter details her journey through the foster care system. The book describes, through her memories and beliefs, her experiences with foster parents, case workers, other children and her biological family. In her story, clear trauma bonds as well as unfortunate events and encounters are described. Her story is that of survival, resiliency and determination. The author speaks publically about her personal experiences in her attempt to help those who continue to be “stuck” in our foster care system. Topics for discussion will include consistency, case management, advocacy and the reporting of child abuse. Ms. Rhodes-Courter founded an organization entitled Foundation for Sustainable Families to teach families the skills of self-sufficiency.

Clinical Objectives:

  1. Discuss the social worker’s role in the foster care system.
  2. Examine -- through the lens of a cognitive therapy approach -- trauma bonds and the resultant effects on relationships.
  3. Explore opportunities for resiliency and continued out-of-home placements.
  4. Discover alternative placements for children who need out-of –home placements including family or kinship care, appropriate foster placements, host home options and residential treatment facilities.
