PoemCrazy: Freeing your Life with Words by Susan Goldsmith Wooldrigde, is a poet’s account of the use of words to create and become fully present to the life that she was meant to live. This best-selling memoir discusses the use of poems as a means of self-discovery, acceptance, and mindfulness.
In this experiential discussion, participants will explore ways in which clinical social workers can validate the client’s emotional experience, and better understand the use of poetry and fantasy as a method of keeping a client’s sense of self from disintegrating. Participants will also have the opportunity to explore their own emotional landscape through the techniques suggested in the book.
Clinical Learning Objectives:
- Identify how poems can be used as tools for safe expression, validation, and emotional integration
- Discuss the use of poems as a means of “mirroring” and enhancing empathetic listening to clients; and
- Learn therapeutic writing techniques that can be used with clients.
