Fran Gerstein’s book, Grief From the Inside Out: Creating Meaning Around the Loss of a Child from Substance Abuse or Suicide is a personal account of the loss of her son, Daniel, in 2014. Through prose, poetry, family photos and her children’s artwork the author creates a narrative including a road map for healing following such a devastating loss. The book concludes with suggestions for managing grief for the short and long term.
Fran Gerstein, MSW, LCSW, BCD will discuss the creation of her narrative and how it has affected her, both personally and professionally. She will offer a close up look at grief, based on her experience as a grief support group leader, and she will facilitate the discussion about the opioid epidemic and how it has affected clients and society.

About the Presenter:
Fran Gerstein, LCSW, BCD, a former Board member of PSCSW has been in private practice for over 30 years. Since the 2014 death of her son, Daniel, she has focused on helping family members survive the loss of a loved one to substance abuse or suicide. She provides a support group for grieving parents, “Life After Loss,” which meets in Rosemont, PA.
Fran has published personal and professional articles in the Philadelphia Inquirer, clinical social work journals, and contributed to a book, Psychotherapist Revealed, by Bloomgarden and Menutti. She has served as adjunct faculty for the University of Pennsylvania, Bryn Mawr School of Social Work and Jefferson University. She is a frequent lecturer on topics including family therapy, couple’s work, eating disorders, and grief and loss

Cost: No charge for PSCSW Members to attend. There is a $10 fee for anyone wishing a CE certificate.
There is a $5 non-refundable administrative fee for any cancellation up to 48 hours prior to this program. No refund will be issued if less than 48 hours notice is given for this program.
