In this memoir, Annie Rogers chronicles her work with Ben, a severely disturbed five-year-old. As Ben begins to respond to Annie in their intricate play therapy, the therapist finds herself reliving her own childhood trauma. As a result of her work with Ben, Annie has a psychotic break. Failed by her previous analyst, Annie's mental illness renders her mute and unresponsive in the hospital. Annie and her new analyst uncover where her childhood terror overlaps with Ben's and Annie learns how to create a new story from the old one. Ultimately Annie’s corrective experience with her new therapist serves to heal both she and Ben.
- Describe the similarities between treating children with play therapy and working with adults psychoanalytically.
- Evaluate how language and silence in therapy can aid or hinder the creation of a safe place for therapist and client.
- Analyze how the patient-as-therapist can interweave her own trauma and recovery with the client's to bring healing to both.
- Critique how transference and countertransference can facilitate or hinder the formation of mutual attachment in the therapeutic dyad.
