
This interactive workshop is designed to help social workers and other mental health professionals enhance their understanding of child/adolescent anxiety disorders and their treatment. The workshop will begin with an overview of “child anxiety 101” (e.g., developmental course, prevalence rates, assessment) and proceed to an in-depth examination of parents’ role in the course and treatment of child anxiety. The workshop will draw upon evidence-based strategies from SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions), the only fully parent-based therapy approach for child anxiety disorders. The workshop will contain breakout rooms and activities that encourage participants to apply new knowledge and strategies. Questions will also be encouraged.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Participants will learn to conceptualize child anxiety disorders from an interpersonal lens.
- Participants will learn supportive parental responses to child anxiety.
- Participants will learn strategies for identifying and reducing parental accommodation of child anxiety.

PRESENTER BIO
Dr. Rebecca Etkin is a licensed clinical psychologist and associate research scientist in the Yale Child Study Center Anxiety & Mood Disorders Program where she studies and treats anxiety and related problems in youth and their families. Dr. Etkin has numerous peer-reviewed publications focused on the intersection of interpersonal relationships and the development and treatment of youth anxiety. Dr. Etkin is an experienced clinician and trainer of SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions), an evidence-based parent-only youth anxiety treatment developed at Yale. Her research testing novel applications of SPACE is funded by organizations including MQ: Transforming Mental Health and the Mental Research Institute.
This event is open to PSCSW members and nonmembers. Participants who attend this program must be present for its entirety to earn 3 clinical credits.
